There are a moltitude of drugs induce loss of sense of smell, smell and taste disturbances.
Drugs can influence olfactive function.
Antibiotics (Ampicillin, Azithromycin, Cirprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, Clarithromici and Tetracycline).
Cytosine and methotrexate chemotherapy can cause hyposmia due to direct toxicity to olfactory neurons and mucosa.
Many drugs influence taste and smell, this is a testament to the complexity of olfactory and gustatory systems.
If you eliminate a drug that may be harmful to sensory perceptions, you can reverse the effects on the smell or taste perception. It's important to remember, in rare cases, that lasting impairment can occur.
It is very difficult to objectify alterations in taste and smell. Olfattometry is not very useful.
Olfactometry is used to evaluate complete or partial loss of smell. This is useful for assessing trauma or accidents or serious loss. In the photo below an olfactometry kit.
